Before addressing the question of how to be filled with the Holy Spirit, there are certain matters that need to be addressed first. As believers, you must clear these hurdles, and this is where the difficulty lies. I have been concerned that my listeners might have gotten the impression that I had a "how-to-be-filled-with-the-Spirit-in-five-easy-lessons" doctrine that I could impart to you. If you have any such vague ideas, I can only stand before you and say, "I'm sorry," because it simply isn't true; I cannot provide you with such a course. There are, however, some things that you must resolve and settle.

The first and most important thing is the matter of your relationship with God. Are you truly born again, having received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? If not, then that is the fundamental issue that needs to be addressed. Salvation is the starting point, the foundation upon which everything else must be built. Without a genuine, personal relationship with God through Christ, you cannot expect to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Secondly, you must deal with the issue of sin in your life. Any unconfessed, unrepentant sin will hinder your ability to be filled with the Spirit. You must be willing to examine your heart, acknowledge your shortcomings, and seek God's forgiveness and cleansing. This is a necessary prerequisite for being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Another crucial element is the matter of your will. Are you fully surrendered to God's will, or are there areas of your life where you are still holding back, unwilling to submit to His authority? The Holy Spirit cannot fully possess and control you if you are not willing to yield completely to Him. This surrender of your will is essential.

Additionally, you must address the issue of faith. Do you truly believe that God is willing and able to fill you with His Spirit? Doubts and unbelief will prevent you from experiencing the fullness of the Spirit's power and presence in your life. You must approach God with a heart of unwavering faith, trusting that He will do what He has promised.

Finally, you must be willing to let go of any preconceived notions or misconceptions you may have about the filling of the Holy Spirit. Approach this matter with an open and receptive heart, ready to be taught and guided by the Spirit Himself. Avoid trying to fit your experience into a predetermined mold or formula, and instead, be open to the unique way in which God may choose to work in your life.

Once these foundational issues have been addressed and resolved, then you can more effectively seek and receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. It's not a simple, formulaic process, but rather a journey of surrender, faith, and dependence on the work of the Holy Spirit in your life. Be patient, be persistent, and trust that God will faithfully fulfill His promise to fill you with His Spirit.
